This is one of those pairings you won’t normally hear about. Usually, people drink beer with their pizza, or find a beer-like wine alternative such as a neutral white like Pinot Grigio, or go with a high acid Italian red like Barbera or Sangiovese. I’ve even done Cabernet Sauvignon in the past, too.
But, we happened to have a Port open, so I figured, why not?
Surprisingly, this is one of the best pizza pairings I’ve found! The sweet, tangy flavors of BBQ sauce meld perfectly with the smooth sweetness of Port wine. Plus, the sugars in the Port coat your mouth and help calm down any spiciness from the pizza and meat. Give it a try sometime!
